Scientists believe the human testicle may provide a less controversial source of cells for stem cell research.

Stem cells hold great promise for new treatments for many conditions as they have the ability to become many different types of adult tissue.

But at present the most flexible type is found in human embryos - and their use is mired in controversy.

Wooooaah there! Did they say 'the human testicle'?

And here was I thinking science had enough horizons to cross already.

If it came down to it, would you let your bollocks, or the man in your life's bollocks, be harvested for stem cells?

Indeed, the very thought sounds fantastic - as long as it involved someone with rubber gloves fondling them gently.

Im planning on cooking some testicles soon - the turkish market has them in the window, still wrapped in a fresh ball sack - fried up in some butter with garlic - delicious.

There's a more available source for stem cells, it seems, and I'd hope they'd explore this before they start poking the boys:
    Menstrual blood yields stem cells

Japanese researchers have harvested stem cells from human menstrual blood, a medical conference has heard.

The researchers say these stem cells could be coaxed into forming specialised heart cells, which might one-day be used to treat failing or damaged hearts.

At the meeting of the American College of Cardiology, Dr Shunichiro Miyoshi reported that he and his colleagues at Keio University in Tokyo collected menstrual blood from six women and harvested stem cells that originated in the lining of the uterus.

They were able to obtain about 30 times more stem cells from menstrual blood than from bone marrow, Miyoshi says . . .

Funfact: testicle is Latin for 'little witness.'
